Young, Italian and Herding Sheep

Who says a down economy is always a bad thing? In Italy, a suffering job market has brought an old tradition back to life. Thanks to bleak employment prospects, about 3,000 Italian men under the age of 35 recently joined the ranks of the sheep herders. According to a recent report, this is good news for the herding business as these young guns bring with them the most current expertise in animal husbandry.

In nearly 80 percent of cases, the young shepherds have rejuvenated the agricultural sector by improving the quality of meat, wool, and cheese they produce. These young workers have introduced better animal husbandry techniques that weren’t used before.

Their dreams of becoming doctors and lawyers may have been shot down due to a bad Italian economy, but these young workers are helping revive an important Italian sector of life.

Tips for Moving with Children

Moving into a new home can be a very exciting time. But it can also be very stressful. Add kids to the mix and it can become even more complicated. So how do you make sure your move runs smoothly? Follow these smooth-move tips.

Make sure everyone is on the same page, and that your children feel included in big family decisions. One way to help your kids feel involved is to hold weekly meetings leading up to the move to keep everyone in the family updated.

Be sure to ask your kids what they would like in a new home and neighborhood, and try and take their suggestions—if reasonable—into account when property searching. It’s a great idea to take kids with you when house hunting. If you can’t bring them along, be sure to take photos and notes to share with them after.

Children are often reluctant to move to a new town and leave what is familiar to them. If you have already chosen a neighborhood, take your kids on a few outings in your new area so that they are excited about relocating. Show them where their new school will be and research local after-school activities they are likely to be interested in. Ask your real estate agent what kids of similar age to your own like to do in your new town. Share this information with your children to amp up their excitement.

During the actual process of packing up, let your kids help. Have them pack their own things, which will not only help ease the process for you but allow them to feel included.

The last tip? Have fun!
